Quad

QUAD comprises a cinema, gallery, café bar, digital resource and workshop. It is a creative hub that connects people and businesses to art and film and creates opportunities for entertainment, education and participation with a programme of exhibitions, outreach, education and community work which provides creative opportunities for thousands of people every year. The exhibition programme includes work from local, national and international artists, and supports diversity, new ideas and experimentation, regularly using digital technology as a platform for production. Formed from two established arts organisations; Q Arts (a community arts initiative) and Metro Cinema (independent cinema), joined forces with Derby City Council to create a cultural partnership, QUAD opened as a new organisation in a new building in 2008.

For In Another Place QUAD will present ‘Adcredo – The Deep Belief Network’, an artwork by Joey Holder that connects to a major exhibition of her work in its main gallery. This new work investigates the construction of belief in online networks, examining the rise of unjust ideologies and fantasies, and how these are capable of affecting our worldview. The advent of digital media has shown that the world is made up of a mass of circulating, disjointed and contradictory information. This multi-dimensional communications network can be easily manipulated by online groups and individuals, which can give rise to new narratives and ideologies. Produced whilst working with the Centre for Investigative Journalism and Social Psychologists, at Goldsmiths Centre for Contemporary Art, the work will take the form of a speculative association, a corporation where ideologies are disseminated to manipulate people. Conspiracy theory, sci-fact and sci-fi, corporate and religious belief systems will be woven together in this multi-dimensional work.

Joey lives and works in Nottingham and London. She graduated with a BA from Kingston University in 2002 and an MFA from Goldsmiths in 2010. She has exhibited widely in the UK and abroad. Past exhibitions include ‘Ophiux (Wysing Arts Centre), ‘Lament of Ur‘ (Karst), ‘WINTER IS COMING (Homage to the future)‘, ‘Deep Inside’ (Russian Biennale) 5th Moscow International Biennale for Young Art and Deptford X. Her work was featured in ‘Sunscreen‘ and at Venice Biennale (2015) as part of EM15.

QUAD’s billboard is located in Derby to bring the organisation and its activities to the attention of local audiences and to communicate to them its aim to commission challenging, thought-provoking and ‘very much of our times’ work that explores and unpicks the ‘digital’. The exhibition Joey Holder: Adcredo: The Deep Belief Network will be on display in QUAD Gallery from 14th July – 21st October 2018. The project is produced in partnership with Bloc Projects, Sheffield.
